Wide Angle Macro

One fine morning my son stopped by with some super fresh eggs -- I mean straight out of the hen fresh. Before turning them into an omelet for our breakfast, of course I wanted to photograph them. The natural light entering the house from a large north-facing window was absolutely perfect that day, as it typically is. I used the Leica Q, a camera I had recently picked up for a 'bargain' price. Turns out the 28 mm perspective is not really my cup of kombucha, but I sure loved the wide angle macros I was able to get with that lens! Alas, I couldn't really justify owning such an expensive macro camera; fortunately, the previous owner was feeling a little seller's remorse and was happy to buy it back from me.

Welcome to the Funhouse

I love me a good greenhouse. Always have. There used to be a nursery in our area where a photographically inclined person could wander around at length taking pictures with no hassles. The owner really didn't care as long as you bought a couple of plants before you drove off. Being married to a gardener, that was what the folks in suits would call a win-win. The old place is long gone and the new generation of nurseries are typically surrounded by chain link fences. While I generally make a conscious effort to line up my shots, in the heat of the moment, part of the fence can sometimes creep into the composition. Kind of like how your finger can wander into a cell phone shot, if ya dig. These days, it is pretty easy to photoshop those kinds of distractions out of the shot and end up with something useable in spite of your, er, sloppiness.

A Few Months of Bliss with the Leica Q

 

A few years ago, a friend texted me to say that a very nice copy of a Leica Q had just come into the used department of his shop, and was I interested in picking it up? He'd give me a good price. While I really loved the qualities of the lens on the Q, the fact of the matter is that I just don't enjoy working at 28mm all that much. Plus, I think the lens is actually a little wider than spec. So I tended to reach for other cameras a little too often. Sad but true. Ultimately, I sold the Q and used the money to help fund a boring Canon. I can put whatever lens I like on that camera, and I use it for everything. Thankfully, I got a few cool images with the Leica.
