John Is Bored At Work

On LingQ (language learning app) the other day, I encountered the sentence "John is bored at work" in Japanese. What a funny example! Yet again, I reflected on how many people spend a significant fraction of their work day dreaming about a better job, and probably learning a second language... Anyhoo, there was a time about 20 years ago when my workaday fantasies revolved around food blogging as a possible alternative. You see, I was a devoted foodie with the pear-shaped physique and elevated insulin levels to prove it. My plan was to start by documenting as I went about preparing meals. What I discovered is that my cooking got worse and my cameras and lenses got covered in a layer of grease. No thanks.

Art and Work

I captured this scene when the Panasonic LX-3 was a new camera and the Georgia Aquarium was a new venue. A good while ago, in other words. Back then, I knew I wanted to shoot more seriously, but I still needed a full time day job to pay the bills. It was a long slog, but I did finally figure out how to shoot and do art full time. I keep telling myself that Hans Hofmann did some of his best work in his seventies. Meaning, I've got some time, still.

The Reason I Quit My Job To Do Art Full Time

Working with folks like this, is why. What a supreme asshole this person was! Anyway, I used to get paid a pretty good salary to manage and worry about the behavior of a collection of such individuals. After a number of years of being a good soldier, I realized that the money wasn't really enough to compensate for the man-breasts I was developing, the substantial beer gut I was transporting from meeting to meeting, the elevated blood pressure, et cetera. Fast forward a couple of years, and, in my slimmed down and chilled state, I've purchased a number of lots of found photographs on eBay, and to my great surprise, they are filled with images of my former colleagues!
