Walk On By

We grew up in a household bathed in Muzak, did my brother and I. How many folks can make a claim like that? That their parents preferred to play elevator music all day? We picked up the lyrics to a thousand songs by simple emersion, a skill with absolutely no practical value I can think of. But I digress. Most folks just walk on by interesting scenes, which is why some of us feel the need to photograph them, I suppose.

Anywhere

You can find interesting compositions anywhere, provided you’re aware of what’s around you. That level of attention is key, at least for me. I had just looked at a wonderful museum show of mid-20th century photographs and was chilling out in the sculpture garden when I made this photograph.

Thick as a brick

A formalist study in composition or a comment on the state of the urban environment? Or maybe neither? Perhaps a better way to frame things: the record of one person's experience. As part of a series, could these recordings, if we paid attention, teach us something? Things we might normally miss as our attention meanders during the course of our day-to-day.
